How Does Yeast Get Out Of Control?

Getting to the Roots of the Problem...

It doesn't really matter which area of your body is infected if you are suffering from Candida Yeast Infection. Whether the symptoms and discomforts appear on your genital areas or on your arm, you are looking at the same general condition. Therefore, you can use the same treatments for all forms regardless of your individual symptoms, how often they occur, or where you tend to feel the most uncomfortable.

Candida Albicans is the technical term for the tiny organism that causes your problems. It is a single cell fungus that is present on literally every human body on the Earth. Fortunately for us, they really present no real danger to the body as long as they remain individual, malnourished cells.

Boric Acid - Do Not Use!

Boric acid has been a controversial issue for quite some time. It has been recommended by many for treatment of yeast infections but the substance is incredibly potent and has regularly led to severe reactions and even death in some cases. There are safer, less dangerous options on the market and so there is no reason to ever have boric acid in place in the home or in hospitals where it can cause much more harm that it does good.

Boric acid is recommended by some to treat yeast and fungal infections such as candidiasis (vaginal yeast infections) by inserting a vaginal suppository containing boric acid daily or for yeast infection of the male pubic region (jock-itch or strong genital odor) by applying the powder to the skin all over the pubic region for several days to a week.

Did you know that boric acid was originally used as an insecticide? No rational individual would put insecticide in a pill and insert it into her vagina OR simply just rub it on the surface of his penis. However, that’s the kind of advice you might get from unproven ‘experts’ out there just to make quick money.

Botulism has been known to form in the garlic and spread through the oil into your body and because it is not cooked, it is highly risky. Many different kinds of garlic oils have been tested and found to include these deadly poison spores. For that matter, if you ever store crushed garlic in oil for cooking, only keep it for 10 days. After that, throw out whatever you haven’t used due to the risks it presents.

Tea Tree Oil - Do Not Consume Orally!

Many sites and individuals have recommended Tea Tree Oil as an oral supplement to help with yeast infections. However, there are no safe studies supporting the consumption of tea tree oil and it can become volatile in the body when not carefully monitored. You should never orally consume this oil and anyone that says otherwise is misinformed.

The Truth about Conventional Treatments

The other set of options to discuss is that of the Conventional Medical treatments out there. There are many ways in which doctors treat yeast infections and while many of them are effective, the question starts to arise as to what exactly you’re getting along with your treatment. What’s the major difference between these things? It’s the way in which the body reacts to the treatment and what the treatment attempts to do to your body. Chemicals poured into your veins are going to be much different from natural organisms that are meant to work in tandem with your body as a complete organism.

First off, the body cannot fully absorb synthetic chemicals. They are artificial and thus are not compatible with our organically created bodies and while they may treat symptoms, they often create new ones along the way.

What many conventional treatments really do is mask your symptoms with drugs and ointments that only cover up what your actual problems are instead of returning your body to the natural balance it needs to remain healthy.

While most doctors are intent on getting you healthy again, many others are interested in making the most possible money off of each patient and that’s only going to result in you paying more money for treatments you probably don’t need. Additionally, you’re going to find that the doctors are always under heavy pressure to prescribe things like creams, ointments, and antibiotics to treat your yeast infections because the drug companies provide them with so much and are the main funders of all the research on the ailment. They know it doesn’t work but want to keep selling their drugs and so they pressure your doctors to keep selling their wares to you regardless of how poorly they work.

Why do Doctors Argue against Natural Cures?

When you base the entirety of science and medicine on empirical evidence that is obtained through closed trials and whitewashed results, problems are bound to arise. Firstly, not everybody is the same. No matter how much doctors want it to be true, the human body is not a cookie cutter machine that operates the same on every level as another body. So, saying that natural cures cannot be proven as affecting yeast infections is naïve at best.

Generally speaking, doctors and drug companies are stuck in their current rut, saying over and over again that chemicals are what is needed to treat your health problems, rather than working towards rebalancing the body and getting you back to a state of health and wellness.

These people are trying to sell us something and to do that they need us to think they have the only solution. If we do not buy more drugs and treat our symptoms, we will be miserable.

Western medicine revolves around making everyone feel like they are born with diseases genetically and need to be treated for them. Thus, the only thing that western medicine strives to do is to treat symptoms of those diseases rather than actually make people feel better. Of course, eventually, you are never cured of any of your problems – you are just tied to a line of drugs that you will take for the rest of your life to control your symptoms and make your life comfortable. Eventually those drugs cause other problems or your disease becomes a bigger issue and it’s much too late to deal with it properly.

Of course, I’m not saying we are not born with predispositions and genetic tendencies. That would also be naïve as medical science has at least proven that much. However, we do have a great deal more control over our health and well being than western medicine would have us believe.

Ultimately, the responsible way of dealing with a disease should start with understanding the internal cause of that disease through listening to your body, taking care and responsibility for your health through diet, lifestyle and hormonal changes. And then ultimately, when you start taking responsibility and tracking how your body reacts to those changes, you can start regaining your body and your health, then living your life in the way you were meant to – cleanly.

Current Conventional Treatments

Just to give you an idea of what current conventional medical treatments are available on the market, a list is provided below of what all you can currently take away from the pharmacy counter or your doctor should you get a yeast infection. Remember though that most of these products are not going to guarantee the alleviation of your yeast infection. Rather, they only treat and patch over your symptoms, making everything disappear for a short period of time.

There are some anti-fungals out there though that will work to kill yeast in an infection. However, keep in mind that these anti-fungals are often temporary kills for the fungus. Candida yeast will continue to thrive as long as the original conditions it grew under remain. If you do not fix that first, it will just return. Additionally, Candida is very adept at developing resistances to various anti-fungal treatments which means you may only empower it by treating it as such. Finally, and for most people most importantly, there are a number of semi-severe symptoms that can hit you if you are not careful with anti-fungals. Make sure you talk to your doctor before taking them to know exactly what can happen.

Current Over the Counter Options

There are many over the counter options out there to treat the symptoms and underlying causes of yeast infections. Creams for sensitive areas as well as suppositories for internal infections in highly sensitive places are popular because of the speed with which they work and the sheer volume of sales they enjoy. Additionally, you will find topical ointments and applications that treat the symptoms of a yeast infection – mainly the uncomfortable itching or burning that comes along with the infection.

There are brands available that are both inexpensive and easy to get but you will find that they also come with their disadvantages, including:

Temporary alleviation of symptoms, but increased body resistance to treatment.

No help for systemic yeast infections due to the wide spread nature of yeast throughout the body, not just in visibly affected regions.

Messy and oily and can cause failure in birth control methods such as condoms.

Serious side effects in pregnant women and girls under 12.

Other Kind of Treatments

There are numerous different kinds of treatments out there that all have their drawbacks. Here is a rundown of each type and what you can expect from them with OTC medications:

Oral Rinses – These only remain in contact with Candida cells for a small period of time and will thus not work very well against wide spread oral or thrush infections. The patches on your tongue and tonsils might disappear but the actual cause of the infection will remain and continue to spread.

Lotions, Creams, and Ointments – These are used for skin and finger/toe-nail infections  and are usually put on the affected region upwards of 3-5 times a day for a few weeks. If you stop the treatment, the fungi will only multiple many times faster and cause an even greater problem. They also contain steroids that can result in liver problems, weakened immune systems, and a prolonged candida infection in other parts of your body.

Lozenges – These are used to treat oral infections instead of the rinses and are usually used 3-5 times a day for a set period of time. Usually, you need to maintain treatment for a long period of time even after your symptoms disappear to ensure that they actually dissipate. The most popular medication for mouth and throat yeast infections include Nystatin and Clotrimazole. Unfortunately, like other anti-fungals, these will only affect the areas of the fungus they are actually in contact with. Deeper infections will remain and possibly spread.

 Prescriptions

While the OTC treatments available are numerous, many yeast infections will persist regardless and require that you go to a doctor if you are still intent on using conventional medication. You will find that most of the prescription medications are stronger versions of over the counter medication that matches up with testing results on the severity and type of your yeast infection. However, keep in mind that if you continually take these medications, eventually you will only make the infections worse and these things will start to spread due to the resistance that can build up over time.

 What They Do (Or Cannot Do)...

Most yeast infection treatments will directly affect the cell wall of the Candida cells and make them leaky so that they break down and thus die. The drugs put into those medications to break down the cells and make them perish are either topical – placed on the site of an infection – or systemic, meaning they are swallowed or given through intravenous treatment.

Topical treatments tend not to absorb into the bloodstream as much and offer few side effects other than itching, redness or slight pain. Systemic drugs are much more varied in side effects and can have a wide array of effects on the body. Some people might feel fine and others might become incredibly ill or even die while taking them. For these reasons, it is vital that you always discuss your medication and treatment with a doctor in detail to make sure you will have no drug interactions or problems due to the medication for your yeast infection.

 

List of Commonly Prescribed Yeast Infection Medications

Amphotericin

This drug is an anti-fungal and may cause a number of side effects including chills, shock, headache, fever, high blood pressure, racing heart, and abnormal liver function. Changes in your cardiovascular system might include a drop in blood pressure or hemorrhage while nervous system side effects include  things like dizziness, confusion, insomnia, tremors, and abnormal thoughts. Other possible side effects include anemia, edema, diarrhea, jaundice, coagulation problems, asthma, rashes, and blood in urine.

Gynazole

This drug is a relatively effective cream that works fairly quickly and can be applied in a single dose. The cream is applied to the affected area and has a texture that works well for areas that might not work with OTC creams and ointments. The active ingredient in this cream is butoconazole which, when ingested, can cause severe damage to your intestines and digestive system – so keep it away from your mouth and always wash your hands after use.

Fluconazole

This anti-fungal has been linked to side effects including liver damage and even death in patients who have existing medical conditions of a certain severity. Severe cases have also included skin loss and at least 25% of all patients have experienced at least some adverse side effects including headache, taste confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, indigestion, pain in the abdomen, and nausea.

Griseofulvin

This anti-fungal has been reported to have multiple side effects including cramps in the abdomen, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and allergic reactions. In rare occurrences, other patients have experienced chest pain, dry mouth, joint pain, muscle aches and pains, and fever. Decreased blood cell production has also been reported as a possible side effect.

Ketoconazole

This orally ingested anti-fungal is usually prescribed as a part of a multi-drug treatment with other anti-biotics to kill the Candida and other fungal forms in the body. Strong dosages can cause serious side effects such as liver damage and related issues. It can weaken your immune system overall, weakening it against Candida if it recurs or spreads and can generally make your condition much worse if not carefully monitored.

Terazol

This drug is a powerful cream that can be applied using an applicator to kill the fungus. It contains a small amount of the drug itself and is given in 7 or 3 day dosage patterns. It is more potent than standard OTC applicators but not by too much. It is relatively messy and can have side effects like headaches, nausea, muscle pain and weakness in your joints or muscles. It only works in the short term if you have a systemic infection.

Itraconazole

This medication has been associated with a number of side effects as well, including hepatotoxicity, liver failure, and even death with some cases occurring within the first week of use. Heart rhythm irregularity and sudden death has also been reported in patients using drugs alongside this medication including those like Quinidine. Congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema have also been reported in patients using this medication.

Miconazole and Nystatin

Both of these creams are relatively limited in their side effects but do have a few reported problems including rash, irritation and burning at the site of application. Generally, these side effects fade within a day or two. However, these creams are only effective for shallow, acute infections, not full systemic problems.

Terbinafine

This drug has been linked to a number of highly dangerous side effects including liver failure leading to need for a transplant or death. Other serious reactions include skin diseases, blood disorders, rash, eczema, diarrhea, itchiness, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, fatigue, joint pain, and hypoglycemia.

Amphotericin B

This is considered a last resort for anti-fungals as it is only used when other OTCs and prescription drugs have failed for the treating physician. It is an intravenously injected drug and has a wide array of side effects including vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, pain in the abdomen, chills and fever.
